The Mind Map The unit my marine biology class has been studying for the past month or so is called "Our Changing Planet". In it, we learned what Climate change really means, greenhouse gases, how it affects the oceans, solutions, etc. While learning these things, we were tasked with writing down concepts on a "Mind Map" and connect them to other concepts having to do with climate change. Some of these concepts include climate, weather, albedo, mitigation, and glacial covers.
Here are the many concepts we were tasked with putting on our mind map: Climate System Weather Atmosphere 2 other words (temperature, variation) Sun Earth Energy Budget Albedo Long wave radiation Short wave radiation Greenhouse gases Carbon Dioxide Water Vapor Methane Nitrous Oxide Atmosphere Temperature Mitigation Power Plant Nuclear Power Wind Fossil Fuel Sinks Forests Oceans Renewable Energy Greenhouse gases Carbon Dioxide Water Vapor Methane Nitrous Oxide Atmosphere Temperature Mitigation Power Plant Nuclear Power Wind Fossil Fuel Sinks Forests Oceans Renewable Energy Sea Level Rise Glacial Cover Ice Cores
Connections: The Climate System expresses itself through weather. Deforestation affects the climate system. Industry affects the climate system. The atmosphere interacts with other parts to create the climate system. Albedo is the measurement of how reflective a substance is of sunlight. Sunlight is shortwave radiation. Sunlight is part of an energy budget. Sunlight is reflected or absorbed by the Earth. Earth expells long wave radiation. Mitigation can reduce greenhouse gases. CO2 is a greenhouse gas. H20 is a greenhouse gas. Methane (CH4) is a greenhouse gas. Temperature is regulated by greenhouse. Fossil fuels emmit greenhouse gases. Forests are carbon sinks. Oceans are carbon sinks. Nuclear power is produced in a power plant. Nuclear power is renewable energy. Wind can be used as renewable energy. The glacial cover has a high albedo. Sea level rise is an effect of the changed climate system.
Reflection Considering that this was not even a project, it was not too hard. I can't really think of anything I did exceptionally well or poorly. I guess one thing I did well on was making connections. Every aspect of climate change is connected to another in someway, so it wasn't too difficult. One thing I didn't do so well on was making it look nice. Although it is pretty clear, it could have been written in a neater way.
