Timeline This is the first project we have done in marine biology. Although it was more like a miniature project, it was still a good way to get us familiar with the history and applications of marine bio. The timeline stars as far back as 3000 BC with ancient Pacific Islanders, the first navigators of the ocean. Marine exploration later became easier with inventions such as scuba and submersible vehicles. Our timeline consists of drawings and detailed descriptions of each important date or year. It is not complete due to absences in our group and the short span of time. We included as much as possible.
Important Content Pacific Islanders - People of the Pacific Islands, first to navigate the oceans 3000 years BC. Phoenicians - A semetic group who dominated overseas trade in the Mediterranean 2000-1200 BC Aristotle - Greek scholar who recorded his observations of marine life. Captain Cook - An English sea captain who sailed the pacific multiple times and even made 3 voyages to the antarctic. Made many scientific observations of what he saw. Charles Darwin - Sailed the HMS Beagle in 1831 to the Galapagos Islands and proposed the theory of evolution. The Challenger Expedition - A British warship that was able to do the first world ocean survey. Marine Labs - Labs created on the shore to study live specimen. First one founded in Naples, Italy. SCUBA - "Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus" Uses a portable container of compressed gas to be able to be taken anywhere when diving in the ocean.
Reflection This mini project was an interesting way to start the year. One thing I did well was research. I found all my information quickly and noted it in a detailed way. Another thing I did well was Dividing the workload. There are 4 people in the group so I was able to give each person one of the 4 sections to research. I also had some things I did not do so well on. One thing I need to improve on is leaership. We fell behind because no one really led the group. Another thing I didn't do so well on was effort. Although I got good information, I did not put much effort into the timeline.
